The Refuge Utah specializes in supporting victims of sexual assault. Resources include: crisis counseling, advocacy at the hospital, educational groups, and therapy groups.

The Rape Recovery Center offers services for survivors at all stages of the recovery process. The Rape Recovery Center offers specialized teams of advocates that provide trauma-informed services at a no cost.

Benefits of Receiving a Medical Exam

  • Victims of rape and sexual assault are encouraged to go to the hospital to receive a Medical Exam.
  • A SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) exam will be performed by nurses with specialty training. This exam offers medical care and evidence collection at no cost to the victim.
  • Sexual assault can affect your physical health. Victims may access treatment for any injuries, receive preventative treatment for STIs, and obtain emergency contraception.
  • By having a sexual assault kit collected, victims have more time to decide whether or not they want to report the crime. Having the evidence collected ensures it will be accessible if the victim decides to report the crime at a later time.
  • Victims have the option to keep their information private, and do not have to go through with an investigation unless they wish to.

 

Common Reactions to Sexual Assault

  • Feeling numb, dazed, shock, or disbelief.
  • Inability to cry.
  • Feelings of guilt or shame; feeling as if you did not do enough to stop the assault.
  • Feeling powerless, betrayed, or fearful.
  • Having flashbacks or nightmares.
  • Feelings of anger at oneself, at the assailant, or at friends and family for not understanding.
